Water Well Hospital Lui

There is a lack of clean drinking water in Lui's hospital. African Mission wants to finance a well that solves this problem.

The second hospital of Western Equatoria State (WES) is the Lui Hospital. Water is of vital importance and especially in a hospital, clean water is a first requirement. Unfortunately, this is not self-evident in Lui’s hospital. African Mission wants to build a well to solve this problem.

The Lui Hospital has no money for food or water. There is a water pump but it has insufficient capacity. Among many other things, clean water is now the number one priority. All together this costs more than € 40,000. Will you help?

Dr. Fraser (1920-1938) is the founder of the Lui Hospital. Dr. Fraser was a missionary/missionary from Scotland. He had a holistic view of missionary work; a healthy body, a clear mind and a good brain are important in this vision. Over the years, the people of Lui have seen this work. This is called the triple mission:

• Health (Hospital)
• Education (school)
• Christianity (church)

From 2009, Doctors with Africa CUAMM (from Italy) runs the hospital. In 2010 CUAMM started supporting the Lui Hospital. Priority was given to improving the management of medicines and medical supplies, introducing an inventory management system and setting up a personnel administration. They built a fence around the site and ensured that the power supply was stable by using a generator.

The Lui Hospital has 102 beds, around 35,000 outpatient procedures are performed annually and there are 6,000 regular admissions, 2,500 antenatal care is provided, 600 deliveries take place plus 85 caesarean deliveries and 5,000 early psychosis interventions in young people. CUAMM has greatly expanded the capacity of the Lui Hospital from 2010, both physically and functionally. The Lui Hospital covers an area of 5.5 hectares. There are 9 main buildings and 12 outbuildings (for medical staff, offices, school complex). Around 250 people stay on the hospital grounds every day.

The hospital is a great blessing for the people of the Amadi. It gives people hope. It is the only hospital in a very large area and the largest hospital in the state of Western Equatoria. There are currently major challenges for this hospital. We limit ourselves here to the problem of clean drinking water. There are two working water pumps on the grounds of the Hospital. Both pumps have a depth of about 90 meters. At one pump, the water is pumped by means of a motorized pump. This engine works with a diesel generator. The other pump is a traditional hand pump (Indian pump).

Last year (2022), during the dry season, the pumps were dry for several weeks. This is of course a disaster for the hospital, the patients and the family. To avoid drying out, it is necessary to install a new pump with a large capacity. Geological research has shown that at a depth of 120 meters the water is of good quality and there is no longer a risk of drying out. CUAMM has investigated the costs and which company can install the pump. They have done the preliminary work and are prepared to take on the project management. African Mission is prepared to finance the pump. A fundraising campaign has been set up for this purpose. We hope to have the pump ready in the summer of 2023.

The first well was dug in 1970 and clean drinking water was already available at a depth of 47 metres. At the moment you already have to drill to a depth of 87 meters to be able to pump up good water. African Mission wants to have a well built to a depth of 120 meters. This is to guarantee the supply of clean drinking water in the coming decades. In addition, it is important that the rainwater is properly filtered through the soil.
